Word in play / Self-pay
Get the whole bill into view.
A medicine price is only part of a care quote. Ask what you would pay to start, to continue, and to leave the plan.
- Self-pay
- Self-pay means paying for the medicine outside insurance, rather than using an insurance benefit.
What the price describes
A headline price needs its terms.
As of September 2026, drug makers advertised prices paid without insurance mostly around $149 to $499 a month for medicines including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.
Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide; Mounjaro and Zepbound contain tirzepatide. Approved uses include blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes for Ozempic and Mounjaro, and weight loss for Wegovy and Zepbound.
The price depended on the medicine, whether it was a shot or pill, and how much medicine was in each dose. For some Zepbound doses, the lower price required ordering a refill within 45 days after the last delivery; ordering later could cost more.
The range is a guide to those advertised medicine prices, not a quote for care aimed at strength or recovery. Get a quote for the exact medicine you are offered.
Published list price
List price is the maker’s published price for the medicine, rather than the amount on your personal bill.
Ask: which kind of price is being shown?
Your care quote
Ask for the actual medicine charge plus visits, membership, tests, and any delivery charge.
Ask: what will I pay after the opening offer?
Build the complete quote
Ask what each payment covers.
| Part of the plan | Ask for this in writing |
|---|---|
| Medicine | The exact medicine name, whether it is a shot or pill, how many doses you get, how long they last, and what you pay. |
| Visits or membership | The usual charge after any opening offer, and what that charge includes. |
| Tests and delivery | Which charges are separate and when they would be due. |
| Renewal and exit | When you are charged again, how long you must keep paying, and how to cancel. |
As of September 2026, certain online services for weight care advertised a monthly care fee and billed medicine separately.
Ask what the membership buys: which visits or other services are included, and which cost extra. Add the medicine charge before comparing the total.
Ask whether the quote would change if the product or plan changed. Keep the answer beside the cancellation terms.

Your insurance plan’s list of medicines it pays for is called a formulary. Prior authorization means getting the insurer’s agreement to pay before the pharmacy supplies your medicine.
- Will my plan pay for this exact medicine for my condition?
- Do I need prior authorization, who requests it, and how long does it last before another approval is needed?
- What is my share of the cost?
- What would I pay if the plan declines coverage?
As of September 2026, Medicare had a temporary programme called the GLP-1 Bridge. For people who met the rules, certain weight-loss medicines cost $50 for a one-month supply.
GLP-1 is a hormone: a natural chemical messenger that affects blood sugar and appetite. Some medicines used for weight loss or diabetes copy those effects.
The programme was due to end on December 31, 2027. It used a separate system for approval and pharmacy payments instead of the usual Medicare Part D system for prescription drug coverage.
Its medicines included Foundayo tablets, Wegovy shots or tablets, and Zepbound in a shot device called KwikPen. Zepbound single-dose pens and vials, meaning small bottles, were not included.
Foundayo is the brand name for the weight-loss medicine orforglipron.
The rules required qualifying Medicare drug coverage and a prescription approved through the programme. One route was being at least 18 with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more. BMI compares weight with height; other routes used lower BMI numbers with particular health conditions. People with type 2 diabetes were directed to their usual drug plan instead, and other exclusions also applied.
Ask your doctor and Medicare drug plan: do I meet the Bridge rules, which medicine and device qualify, and who submits the programme request? Get that answer before using the advertised price in your budget.
CMS is the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the agency running this programme.

Several maker price offers and savings cards had terms ending on December 31, 2026, when checked that September.
Ask for the terms that will apply at the next renewal, not just the terms shown today.
